Stay sun-safe: From sunscreens to sun hats

Tips to help you enjoy the sunshine all year around.

While everyone loves being embraced by a warm ray of sunshine,  it is  important to understand that too much exposure to sun can end up doing more harm than good.

As they say, everything must be done in moderation. After all, why should you miss out on the trips to the beach and picnics in summer and the long walks in fall season, when you can enjoy all of it with just a few tips to stay safe in the sun.

Wear protective clothing

Long sleeved shirts and long pants help cover any exposed parts of the skin naturally. Wear loose and light fabrics to give your skin room to breathe. Opt for a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears and scalp. While sunglasses may double up as a fashion statement, it also works to protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays that can cause eye concerns with continuous exposure to the sun. Choose sunglasses that block 99% or 100% of UVB and UVA rays as they offer maximum protection for your eyes.

Avoid stepping out when the sun is at its peak

If you can avoid stepping out between 10 am – 4pm, when the sun is at its peak, it could help to protect your skin naturally. Plan your outdoor activities before or after these times. If you do have to step outside, ensure you manage to get some natural shade. Stand under a tree or use an umbrella when on the beach. Let children play in the shade if they have to be outdoors, where there is natural ventilation and cooling.

Use sunscreen

Harsh UV rays and environmental stressors can take a huge toll on the skin when one is continuously exposed to it. Applying sunscreen, especially before you step out of your home, acts like a protective barrier that shields your skin from these stressors. For maximum protection, apply a thin layer of sunscreen on every exposed part of the skin at least 30 minutes before you step out and reapply when needed. A sunscreen best works when used with other sun protection methods mentioned in this post.  Look out for chemical-free and organic sunscreens that can be used by kids as well.

When in doubt, check the UV index

With Australia being so close to the equator, it is normal to experience warmer temperatures. The UV index is a system designed to let one know how much radiation from the sun reaches us on earth. Australia experiences a UV index of 10-14 which is on the higher side. Knowing the UV index rate in the state you live enables you to be better protected from the sun if you are stepping outdoors.

Always remember to

  • Drink enough water when outside to keep your body hydrated.
  • Be careful around water and sand at the beach as they tend to reflect  sun rays and cause a sunburn.
  • Not let your guard down if it’s an overcast day. The sun’s  UV rays can make it through the clouds too. Always use sunscreen.
  • Carry your own umbrella for shade wherever you go.
  • Scan your skin regularly to check for any irregularities. These could range from a change in the look of birthmarks and moles to any new skin condition that you may notice. See your doctor if you notice any changes.
